China's first salt-cavern compressed air energy storage demonstration project, the 60 MW Jintan facility operated by China Salt Group, has achieved over 1,500 consecutive days of stable operation as of July 24, 2026.
The project, the world's first non-combustion type salt-cavern compressed air energy storage station and the only one in China to achieve long-term commercial operation, has completed more than 960 grid peak-shaving cycles since grid connection, with cumulative peak-shaving power exceeding 650 GWh and carbon reduction of over 300,000 tonnes.
Leveraging proven underground engineering technology and operational experience from the first phase, China Salt subsidiary Jintan Salt Cavern Energy Storage and Huaneng Group's Jiangsu Energy are accelerating construction of the second-phase 2x350 MW storage project.
Once operational, the project's energy conversion efficiency is expected to exceed 70%, making it the largest single-unit and most efficient salt-cavern storage project under construction in China.
