China imported 42.09 million tonnes of coal in August 2026, down 1.51% from 42.74 million tonnes in the same month last year, customs data showed on September 8. The August volume was 1.49% lower than July's 42.73 million tonnes.

Coal import value reached $4.17 billion in August, up 48.58% year on year but down 4.22% from a month earlier. The average import price stood at $99.09/t, up $33.40/t from a year ago and down $2.82/t month on month.

During January-August 2026, China's total coal imports reached 310.19 million tonnes, up 3.40% year on year, with cumulative import value of $26.67 billion, up 19.80%.
