East Guangdong clean energy transmission project to start construction in 2029

A key clean energy transmission project linking East Guangdong to Shenzhen is planned to begin construction in 2029, part of China's 15th "Five-Year Plan" for a new-type power system.

The project will run over 300 km from Shanwei to Shenzhen in Guangdong, with a transmission capacity of 8 GW. Once operational, it will deliver about 8 TWh of clean electricity to Shenzhen and 4 TWh to Hong Kong annually, optimizing the power mix in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and enhancing Shenzhen's grid resilience.

Its main innovation is the use of multi-terminal VSC technology to connect directly to the 220 kV urban grid, providing a flexible interconnection channel and black-start power source for Shenzhen's 500 kV network.

Currently, major west-to-east power transmission corridors, including the Yunnan-Northwest ±800 kV UHV DC project and the ±500 kV Xing'an DC project, continuously deliver clean hydropower from Yunnan and Guizhou to Shenzhen. The second East Guangdong-to-Shenzhen channel is under accelerated construction and will transmit offshore wind and nuclear power to the city upon commissioning. The Xizang-Southeast to Greater Bay Area ±800 kV UHV DC project is also under construction, which will eventually supply clean hydro, wind and solar power from Xizang directly to Shenzhen.

In the future, with the completion of a series of cross-regional transmission channels, Shenzhen will form an AC-DC hybrid grid featuring "UHV west-to-east power transmission corridors, multiple green power channels from East Guangdong, and a strong local dual-ring main grid."
