Switzerland's largest battery storage facility to date, operated by Axpo and Energie Ur, was inaugurated on September 9 in Plattischachen, canton of Uri, local media reported.

The project comprises two battery energy storage systems built in close proximity. Axpo's system has a power capacity of 50 MW, while Energie Uri's has 8.4 MW, making the combined facility the largest in the country.

Cantonal government member Hermann Epp said the storage systems have transformed the industrial area into an energy hub of national importance and demonstrate how the energy transition can be implemented in practice, bringing technological know-how and contracts to local companies.

The batteries are designed to store surplus electricity, including from solar and wind generation, and feed it back into the grid when needed. Axpo's system will primarily serve the national market, while Energie Uri's will focus on cantonal needs.

Axpo is expanding its battery portfolio across Europe, operating facilities in Switzerland and Sweden, with more than 300 MW of projects under construction in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania. The company is also increasingly developing battery storage systems in combination with solar and wind generation.
