Gansu new energy output exceeds daily power use for first time

New energy power generation in northwestern China's Gansu province reached 496 GWh on September 2, equivalent to 103.95% of the province's total electricity consumption that day, marking the first time daily new energy output surpassed daily power use, according to State Grid Gansu Electric Power Co.

At 11:51 am the same day, new energy output peaked at 28.88 GW, accounting for 80.8% of the province's total generation at that time, setting a new record.

Gansu, rich in wind and solar resources, is a key construction area for large-scale wind and solar power bases in desert and other arid regions. The province has prioritized energy security and base construction, seizing opportunities from carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals to build a major new energy and equipment manufacturing hub.

New energy installed capacity in Gansu has exceeded 83 GW, representing over 65% of the province's total installed capacity, with a power supply structure dominated by wind and solar with multi-energy complementarity now largely in place.

Tang Wen, deputy director of the power dispatch division at State Grid Gansu Electric Power's dispatch center, attributed the dual records to the province's scale advantage in new energy, as well as upgrades to grid infrastructure and enhanced dispatch capabilities.

To address the volatility and intermittency of new energy, the grid operator has coordinated power transmission, integrated dispatch of wind, solar, thermal, hydro and storage resources, electricity trading markets and virtual power plants to ensure new energy can be generated, connected, utilized and transmitted effectively. The sharp increase in green power supply capacity also better meets the clean energy needs of Gansu's industrial sector, helping convert the province's resource advantages into development advantages.
