Several major rivers in central and eastern Europe have seen water levels drop sharply due to persistent high temperatures and severe drought. Sections of the Danube and Rhine have fallen to historic lows, disrupting shipping, energy production, agricultural water supply and tourism. Hungary and Romania have at times shut down or reduced output at nuclear reactors due to insufficient cooling water, raising risks of energy supply strain across multiple European countries. Germany's Die Zeit reported on July 30 that Romania's Cernavoda nuclear plant faced the risk of both reactor units being taken offline.
