China Huaneng Group's first wholly-owned large-scale pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear project has achieved grid connection, marking a key step toward commercial operation.

Unit 3 of the Huaneng Changjiang Phase II nuclear power project, Hainan province's first "Hualong One" reactor, was connected to the grid on August 1 at 15:16, generating the company's first PWR nuclear power.

The project plans two 1.2 GW nuclear units using China's domestically developed third-generation "Hualong One" PWR technology, which combines active and passive safety systems to enhance reliability and safety.

Once fully operational, the project will generate up to 18 TWh annually, saving over 6.32 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 11.6 million tonnes per year, supporting Hainan Free Trade Port's clean energy needs and China's carbon peak and neutrality goals.
