Xinjiang-Chongqing UHV line transmits 30 TWh since launch

Power transmission via the Xinjiang-Chongqing ±800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current (UHV DC) line has exceeded 30 terrawatt-hours since its launch, with a single-day peak of 145 GWh.

Since the start of the summer heatwave, sustained high temperatures across China have driven up cooling loads, industrial power use and data center computing demand. Chongqing's peak power load hit 31.4 GW on July 16, setting a new record for three consecutive days.

The 2,260-km line, spanning five provinces and regions, uses dual-800 kV UHV technology to deliver clean power from gigawatt-scale wind and solar farms in the Xinjiang Gobi desert directly to Chongqing. During the peak summer period, the line's maximum transmission capacity has reached 6 GW, covering about one-fifth of Chongqing's peak power demand.

State Grid Xinjiang and State Grid Chongqing are coordinating operations to ensure stable and safe energy supply along the 2,260-km line during the extreme heat.
