Beijing has started construction of the Xiheying-Fangshan 500 kV transmission line, the first external power channel project under the city's 15th "Five-Year Plan" period.
The project, a key infrastructure initiative for the capital's new power system and resilient urban grid, runs from Xiheying town in Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, to Yancun town in Fangshan district, Beijing. It involves 184.7 km of new and upgraded lines, including 21.2 km within Beijing, with 54 new towers and 52 old ones dismantled, plus upgrades to two 500 kV substations.
Once operational, the line will boost clean energy transmission from Hebei into Beijing, optimize the regional grid layout, and support the capital's high-quality development and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated strategy.
Beijing's grid currently has 13 external 500 kV power channels with 28 circuits, forming an expanded AC-DC dual-ring network supported by ultra-high voltage lines around the capital and large energy bases.
Under the 15th "Five-Year Plan", State Grid Beijing Electric Power is coordinating five cross-provincial 500 kV projects, including Xiheying-Fangshan, Xiong'an-Xinhangcheng, Beijing East-Huaxiang, Zhuozhou Phase II grid connection, and Langfang North-Yizhuang, while advancing the 8 GW "Jilin Power to Beijing" ultra-high voltage DC project to strengthen the capital's power supply capacity and grid security.
