China's largest onshore wind farm starts operation in Inner Mongolia

China's first and largest land-based wind farm deploying 10-MW turbines commenced commercial operations in North China's Inner Mongolia on September 14, reported state media CCTV.

The project, owned by Inner Mongolia Energy Group, has 150 turbines each with a capacity of 10 MW, forming the country's biggest "giant matrix" of onshore wind turbines. It is located in Ganqimaodu township.

The machines use all-carbon-fiber blades, whose root diameter reaches 3.6 meters, boosting root load-bearing capacity by over 26%, according to CCTV.

The blade tip can stay 12% farther from the tower during operation, which significantly enhances blade safety. The wind turbines feature a 1.7-meter main bearing, which is wider and thicker than previous designs, increasing load capacity by over 20% and ensuring overall safety of the turbine.

At full capacity, the wind farm can generate over 5.44 TWh of clean power annually, cutting standard coal use and carbon dioxide emissions by 1.64 million and 4.98 million tonnes, respectively, a manager of the project was cited by CCTV as said.

As the world's biggest clean energy investor, China spent $625 billion last year on clean energy transition, accounting for 31% of the global total of $2.03 trillion, showed a report released by the British consultancy Ember.

Inner Mongolia boasts the richest wind power resources, about half of the total in China's land area. The autonomous region has vigorously promoted new-energy installations in recent years, especially wind and solar, in response to the country's green development strategy.

Its scale of new-energy installed capacity has continued to rise. In November 2024, its monthly new energy generation surpassed 10 TWh for the first time, according to official data.
