Total electricity consumption in southern China's five provinces, including Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan, reached 956.3 TWh from January to July, rising 8.6% year on year, according to China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd.

The primary sector, mainly agriculture, witnessed a 3.8% rise on the year in electricity usage; power consumption in the secondary sector, predominantly industrial activities, climbed 9.4% from a year earlier; that in the tertiary sector, primarily services, gained 9.2% from the preceding year. Residential use posted a 5.5% increase.

Electricity consumption of the secondary sector contributed 66% to the overall power consumption growth of the five provinces, showing a significant increase of 27.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

The manufacturing sector's electricity consumption in the five provinces grew 9.8% year on year from January to July.

Guangdong led the total electricity consumption with 509.5 TWh from January to July. Yunnan and Hainan both experienced power usage growth rates exceeding 10%, with Yunnan topping the five provinces at 14.2%.

In Beihai, Guangxi, leveraging its advantages in quartz sand resources and port location, the city is establishing itself as a hub for photovoltaic equipment manufacturing in China. From January to July, the electricity consumption for photovoltaic equipment and component manufacturing in the city soared by 110% from a year ago.

During the same period, the total traded volume of green electricity in Hainan reached 664 GWh, 7.8 times the annual volume in 2023.
