China Aug coal output rebounds MoM, falls YoY

China's raw coal output posted a recovery from the previous month in August 2026, yet still declined from a year earlier.

The country produced 361.82 million tonnes of raw coal in August, up 5.4% month on month but down 7.7% year on year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on September 15. The year-on-year decline was 2.4 percentage points narrower than in July.

Daily output averaged 11.67 million tonnes in August, up 5.42% from 11.07 million tonnes in July but down 7.38% from a year earlier.

For January-August 2026, cumulative raw coal output stood at 3.06 billion tonnes, down 3.3% year on year, with the decline widening by 0.4 percentage point from the first seven months.
