China's key surveyed steelmakers produced 20.74 million tonnes of crude steel in late August (August 21-31) 2026, averaging 1.89 million tonnes per day, down 4.0% from the preceding ten-day period, data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) showed.

Pig iron output among the surveyed mills totaled 19.41 million tonnes, or 1.77 million tonnes per day, down 3.0% from mid-August, while steel products output reached 22.09 million tonnes, with daily output of 2.01 million tonnes, up 4.8%.

Based on these figures, national daily crude steel output in the period was estimated at 2.39 million tonnes, down 4.0% from the previous ten-day period, with daily pig iron output at 2.14 million tonnes, down 3.0%, and daily steel products output at 3.83 million tonnes, up 2.0%.

By region, daily crude steel output among surveyed mills fell in North China, East China, Southwest China and Central-South China, while rising in Northeast and Northwest China.

North China saw daily crude steel output drop by 30,000 tonnes, or 4.7%, with Hebei province down 31,000 tonnes and Tianjin down 9,000 tonnes, while Shanxi province added 10,000 tonnes.

East China's daily crude steel output declined by 31,000 tonnes, or 5.4%, mainly due to reductions in Jiangsu, Shanghai and Shandong provinces, while Fujian province posted an increase of 6,000 tonnes.

Southwest China's daily output fell by 7,000 tonnes, or 6.1%, led by declines in Yunnan and Chongqing. Central-South China saw output drop by 19,000 tonnes, or 5.5%, with reductions across Guangdong, Hubei, Henan, Hunan and Guangxi.

Northeast China's daily crude steel output rose by 5,000 tonnes, or 2.4%, with Liaoning and Jilin provinces both posting gains. Northwest China added 2,000 tonnes, or 2.2%, driven by Gansu province.

For pig iron, daily output among surveyed mills fell in North China, East China, Southwest China and Central-South China, rose in Northeast China, and was broadly flat in Northwest China.

North China's daily pig iron output declined by 23,000 tonnes, or 3.7%, with Hebei down 30,000 tonnes and Tianjin down 8,000 tonnes, while Shanxi added 15,000 tonnes.

East China's daily output fell by 26,000 tonnes, or 5.0%, mainly due to reductions in Jiangsu, Shandong and Anhui provinces. Southwest China saw output drop by 4,000 tonnes, or 4.1%, while Central-South China declined by 5,000 tonnes, or 1.6%.

Northeast China's daily pig iron output rose by 3,000 tonnes, or 1.6%, with Liaoning and Jilin both posting gains.

For steel products, daily output among surveyed mills rose in all regions except Southwest China, where it edged down 1,000 tonnes, or 0.6%.

Northeast China led the gains with a 29,000-tonne increase, or 16.8%, mainly driven by Liaoning province. North China added 16,000 tonnes, or 2.3%, with Shanxi province up 14,000 tonnes.

East China's daily steel products output rose by 21,000 tonnes, or 3.9%, with increases across Anhui, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces. Northwest China added 6,000 tonnes, or 7.7%, led by Shaanxi and Xinjiang.

Central-South China's daily output increased by 21,000 tonnes, or 6.5%, mainly driven by Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei and Guangxi.
