Twenty coal assets in Russia's Kuzbass have already ceased operations, accounting for more than 20% of the total number of underground and open-pit mines, according to statements by Regional Governor Ilya Seredyuk. That was higher than 17 mines, or 18% idled in 2025. Six to seven enterprises will not resume operations and have effectively been placed under care and maintenance. The remaining assets may return to operation if the situation in the industry improves. Around 80% of Kuzbass coal enterprises have continued to operate at a loss since the beginning of 2026. There are currently 150 coal companies operating in Kuzbass (-1 YoY), including 38 underground mines, 55 open-pits, and 57 processing plants and sorting facilities.
