State Grid Corp of China has unveiled a package of measures to support the country's carbon peak goals during the 15th "Five-Year Plan" period, focusing on expanding renewable energy integration and grid infrastructure.
The plan outlines 20 measures across seven areas, including accelerating the connection of new energy projects such as desert-based large-scale bases, distributed solar and offshore wind. State Grid aims to add around 200 GW of new energy capacity annually across its service area during the 15th "Five-Year Plan" period.
The company will strengthen pumped storage and new-type energy storage development, with new pumped storage projects put into operation and construction starts each exceeding 30 GW during the period. It targets over 120 GW of pumped storage capacity in operation and under construction by 2030, while adding 140 GW of new-type energy storage capacity across its service area.
State Grid plans to accelerate ultra-high-voltage transmission corridor construction, with 15 new cross-regional direct current lines to be commissioned during the period, lifting cross-provincial transmission capacity to 500 GW. Inter-regional flexible power exchange capacity is set to more than triple from the end of the 14th "Five-Year Plan" period.
The company will also strengthen distribution network construction to accommodate over 60 GW of newly added distributed generation annually, and promote pilot projects for rural energy revolution, active distribution networks and microgrids.
State Grid aims to raise the share of new energy in its total power generation to over 30% by 2030, with new electricity demand fully covered by clean energy. It will support the development of computing-power coordination and zero-carbon industrial parks, and improve market mechanisms for clean energy participation, including cross-regional power trading and time-of-use pricing reforms.
