State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Qinghai University's supercomputing center and the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, completed the first batch of cross-province computing dispatch verification for the summer peak season on July 22.
Zhou Ji, head of the digital department at State Grid Qinghai, said the test expanded on previous cross-province computing coordination trials, proving that computing centers can provide peak-shaving support to the power grid during critical periods while lowering operational costs and creating a mutually beneficial dispatch loop between eastern and western regions.
The dispatch used spot electricity price differences between provinces as a signal to shift computing tasks from Wuxi, Jiangsu, to Qinghai. During peak hours on July 14, Wuxi data centers faced rising electricity prices, while Qinghai had surplus green power from solar generation at low prices. State Grid Qinghai used a computing-power coordination platform to move non-real-time tasks from Wuxi to Qinghai University's supercomputing center, while rescheduling Qinghai's deferrable tasks to midday.
The coordinated dispatch mobilized about 2 PFLOPS of computing power, equivalent to 200 high-performance servers, increasing green power consumption by approximately 984 kWh, or the daily power use of four standard server cabinets.
