Northwest Grid sets new record in daily new energy generation

Northwest China Power Grid hit all-time highs in both daily new energy generation and its share of total power supply on March 12, according to State Grid News.

The regional grid delivered 1.92 TWh of new energy power in a single day, accounting for 46.26% of total electricity output, marking a continued upgrade in new energy generation capacity.

Northwestern China has entered its high-wind season. Wind power on the grid reached a peak of 67.26 GW on March 12, with total wind generation hitting 1.34 TWh.

To secure efficient new energy integration, the branch optimized grid operation modes and leveraged unified regional dispatch. It tapped the peak-shaving potential of captive power plants, with the off-grid power reaching a maximum of 3.1 GW.

Dynamic adjustment of pumped storage and new-type energy storage charging-discharging profiles boosted new energy generation by 95.31 GWh and lifted the new energy utilization rate by 3.03 percentage points.

Leveraging the large grid's resource allocation capability, the branch launched high-frequency inter-provincial transactions covering spot markets, peak-shaving auxiliary services and reserve markets. It completed 2,094 transactions in one day, increasing new energy power generation by a further 216 GWh.

Northwest China Power Grid currently has the highest proportion of new energy installed capacity among China's regional power grids. During the 15th "Five-Year Plan" period (2026-2030), annual new energy capacity additions in the region are expected to exceed 100 GW.
