Indonesia's mining ministry has approved revised 2026 work plans and budgets (RKAB) for about a dozen nickel companies and dozens of coal miners, allowing some previously suspended mines to resume operations, Director General of Minerals Tri Winarno said. However, members of the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) confirmed they have not yet received the revised RKAB documents. Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia earlier said quota adjustments would be made prudently, prioritizing companies with higher mining royalty rates, and declined to disclose specific output increases to avoid impacting global prices.
Kazakhstan's coal exports totaled 2.34 million tonnes in June 2026, up 2.3% year on year but down 5.6% month on month, according to the latest data from the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In the first half year, cumulative coal exports reached 14.93 million tonnes, a 4.5% increase year on year.
S Korea's KOWEPO launched a tender on Aug 21 to purchase up to 2.02 Mt of imported thermal coal (5,200-6,000 Kcal/kg NAR) for its Taean power plant. The tender calls for an initial 155 Kt cargo to be loaded from Indonesian or Canadian ports or 130 Kt cargo from Australian ports btw H2 Oct and Dec 2026, or 155 Kt from S Africa over Nov-Dec 2026, followed by annual deliveries 465 Kt over Nov 1, 2026-Oct 31 2030. Coal loaded at Russian and Chinese ports is not accepted. The tender closes at 10:00 Korea Standard Time on Aug 27.
Mongolia produced 11.17 million tonnes of coal in July 2026, down 4.59% month on month but up 49.05% year on year, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office of Mongolia. Iron ore output stood at 1.19 million tonnes, down 16.66% year on year.
As of midday close on Aug 24, coke futures for January delivery (J2701) rose 3.87%, coking coal futures (JM2701) gained 2.93%, and iron ore futures (I2701) climbed 1.77%.
Brisbane port coal exports totaled 390,800 tonnes in July 2026, down 24.04% year on year and 29.54% month on month, according to data released by Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across several parts of the country on Aug 24.
