China Aug coking coal imports hit 2nd-highest level of the year

China's coking coal imports fell in August 2026 after two consecutive months of growth, though they remained at a relatively high level and still posted strong year-on-year gains.

Imports totaled 13.07 million tonnes in August 2026, the second-highest monthly level of the year, up 28.6% from 10.16 million tonnes a year earlier but down 4.0% from 13.62 million tonnes in July.

The import value reached $1.73 billion in August, surging 96.9% year on year but down 5.9% from the previous month. The average import price was calculated at $132.1/t, down $2.7/t month on month but up $45.8/t from a year earlier.

In January-August 2026, China imported a cumulative 93.57 million tonnes of coking coal, up 28.9% year on year. The cumulative import value was $10.60 billion, up 43.8% from the same period last year.
