China has eliminated about 720,000 tonnes of ozone-depleting substances since joining the Montreal Protocol, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said at a conference marking the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment and the 2026 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16.

Since accepting the Kigali Amendment, China began quota licensing for hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in 2024. Cumulative HFC production and use have been reduced by more than 1.19 billion tonnes and 759 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, respectively, against the country's compliance targets, the ministry said.

China will continue to fulfill its obligations under international environmental conventions and strengthen cooperation with other parties and international organizations, the ministry added.
