Shougang Group and Rio Tinto have launched a 10,000-tonne blast furnace gas carbon dioxide capture industrial trial at Shougang Jingtang, marking a joint effort to deepen decarbonization in the steel sector.
The project, which started operation on September 15, has achieved a carbon dioxide removal rate of over 95% with stable system performance, Shougang said.
China's steel production is dominated by the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace long process, with blast furnace ironmaking accounting for more than 65% of carbon emissions across the entire steelmaking chain, making it a critical target for decarbonization.
Shougang independently developed high-efficiency chemical absorbents and supporting processes for carbon capture, and built the 10,000-tonne-scale industrial trial unit to address decarbonization challenges in blast furnace ironmaking.
The project was approved in November 2024 and construction began in July 2025 at the No. 3 blast furnace area of Shougang Jingtang. All decarbonization indicators currently meet design standards, laying a foundation for future resource utilization of captured carbon dioxide.
