Coal shipments by rail from Russia's key producing region, Kuzbass, totaled 14.9 million tonnes in August 2026, a 9.5% increase compared with the same period last year, according to data from the region's Ministry of Coal Industry.

Export shipments stood at 8.9 million tonnes in the month, up 6.1% year on year. Of this volume, 4.51 million tonnes were shipped eastward, 7.7% above the Russian Railways target, but not covering losses due to wagon derailments in July; 4.06 million tonnes were delivered northwest, up 48.4% from the year before; and 0.09 million tonnes were shipped southward, slumping 93.2% year on year.

In the first eight months, total coal transportation stood at 116.7 million tonnes. Of that, coal exports from Kuzbass totaled 73.1 million tonnes, 8.1% higher than the corresponding period last year. Eastbound shipments reached 36.75 million tonnes, against the plan of 36.72 million tonnes.

Coal production in Kuzbass stood at 122.6 million tonnes in January-August, preliminary data from the Russian Ministry of Energy showed, falling 2.2% year on year.

Coal processing volume at the region's washing plants, seasonal processing plants, and crushing/sorting plants reached 12.0 million tonnes in August, up 2.5% from a year earlier, accounting for 78.4% of total monthly output.
