Coal exports from three major terminals in North Queensland, Australia rebounded sharply in August 2026, reaching their second-highest level of the year.

The terminals — Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Abbot Point — shipped a combined 12.97 million tonnes of coal in August 2026, up 14.54% year on year and 29.15% from the previous month, according to the latest data from North Queensland Bulk Ports Corp.

Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, with a throughput capacity of 85 Mtpa, exported 6.19 million tonnes in August, up 18.97% from a year earlier and 33.88% from July.

Abbot Point, the northernmost and smallest of the three terminals with a capacity of 50 Mtpa, shipped 3.04 million tonnes in August, up 7.02% year on year and 6.75% month on month.

Hay Point Coal Terminal, operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, exported 3.74 million tonnes in August, up 14.00% from the same period last year and 45.38% from a month earlier. The terminal has a capacity of 55 Mtpa.

In January-August 2026, the three terminals exported a total of 85.74 million tonnes, up 3.41% from 82.92 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier. The vast majority of North Queensland's exports are coking coal.
