U.S. estimated coal output fell in the week ended September 5, reversing from a gain in the prior weeks, according to data released by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) on September 10.

Estimated output totaled 9.93 million short tons (9.01 million tonnes), down 9.31% from the previous week and 5.55% from the same period a year earlier.

Wyoming and Montana produced an estimated 4.59 million short tons during the week, down 9.36% week on week but up 4.03% from a year earlier.

Illinois output was estimated at 574,385 short tons, down 8.36% from the prior week and 16.49% from the same period last year. Appalachian output fell 9.06% week on week and 9.63% year on year to 2.98 million short tons.

Year to date, US estimated coal output totaled about 351 million short tons, down 2.4% from 360 million short tons in the same period of 2025.

Rail coal shipments for the week came in at 58,037 carloads, down 5,955 carloads from the previous week and 2,890 carloads from a year earlier. Since the start of 2026, rail coal shipments have totaled 2.03 million carloads, down 1.8% year on year.
