Russia's coal companies suffered a net loss of 153.3 billion rubles ($1.8 billion) in January-June 2026, 17.2% lower than a net loss of 185.2 billion rubles a year earlier, according to Rosstat data.
Total profits of Russian coal producers fell 44.8% year on year to 31.3 billion rubles, while total losses declined 23% to 184.6 billion rubles, data showed.
Only 32.7% of companies remained profitable during the first half year, down 1.3 percentage points from 34% in the corresponding period of 2025. By contrast, 67.3% operated at a loss, an increase from 66% a year prior.
Earlier, it was reported on August 27 that government agencies need to more actively motivate subsoil users to commission facilities in the Siberian Federal District. The region is home to 3,400 of Russia's 20,000 existing deposits. Rosnedra representatives emphasized that the agency monitors compliance with subsoil use conditions and resource extraction.
The share of losses at coal companies remains the highest in the mining sector. Among all economic sectors for which Rosstat maintains statistics, the share of losses at steam and hot water production, transmission, and distribution companies is also high (66.3%), followed by other land passenger transport (63.3%), and water transport (58.3%).
