Indonesia's Jambi coal export value plunge 82.6% YoY in Jan-Jul

Coal export value in Indonesia's Jambi province fell 82.58% to $6.45 million in the first seven months of 2026, down about $30.56 million from the same period a year earlier, as government export restrictions and weaker demand weighed on shipments, provincial statistics office data showed.

In July alone, coal exports totaled just $361,033, while no coal shipments were recorded in June. Coal now contributes only 0.54% of Jambi's total exports, sharply down from previous years when it played a more significant role in the province's mining sector.

Jambi, located on the island of Sumatra, is one of Indonesia's coal-producing provinces, with mines feeding both domestic power plants and export markets. The decline reflects Jakarta's broader tightening of coal export flows as it prioritizes domestic supply obligations.

Despite the coal slump, mining remains a mainstay of Jambi's exports, contributing 44.9% of the total between January-July. Oil and gas dominated the sector during the peroid, accounting for 44.36%, or $534.02 million, of total exports. Manufacturing exports grew 12.49% year on year to $610.83 million, while agriculture fell 42.02%.

Overall, Jambi's exports reached $1.20 billion in the first seven months, down 2.22% from the same period in 2025. Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, India and the U.S. were the largest destinations, with Singapore alone absorbing 43.53% of exports.
