Russia's rail-borne coal shipments for export to China totaled 9.42 million tonnes in August 2026, down 3.11% month on month, according to preliminary data from Metals & Mining Intelligence.

Thermal coal shipments accounted for 5.87 million tonnes of the August total, down 5.14% from the previous month. Coking coal shipments fell 0.31% month on month to 2.54 million tonnes, while anthracite shipments rose 2.43% to 1.01 million tonnes.

Most of the coal was routed to Far East ports, which received 7.52 million tonnes, down 5.40% month on month and accounting for 80% of the total. Vanino port was the top destination with 2.06 million tonnes, down 7.67% from a month earlier, representing 27% of the Far East port volume.

Data for the newly included Lavna port prior to July has not yet been recorded. The coal shipments to Lavna port stood at 14,000 tonnes in July and 4,000 tonnes in August.

Excluding Lavna port data, Russia's rail-borne coal shipments for export to China totaled 71.22 million tonnes in January-August 2026, up 7.07% year on year.
