China Energy Engineering Group has started construction on the second phase of the Guoneng Chongqing Wanzhou power plant expansion project, a 2x1,000 MW coal-fired unit in southwest China.

The project, undertaken by China Energy Engineering Construction Group and Jiangsu No.3 Electric Power Construction Co., features ultra-supercritical once-reheat generating units with a designed net coal consumption rate of 267.59 grams per kilowatt-hour, 18 grams lower than the 285 g/kWh average of existing 1,000 MW units in China.

Based on an average annual generation of 10 TWh, the project will save 180,000 tonnes of standard coal annually. The plant is equipped with ultra-low emission flue gas treatment facilities and a closed-loop water recycling system, achieving zero industrial wastewater discharge to protect the Yangtze River ecosystem in the Three Gorges reservoir area.

Upon completion, the Wanzhou plant's total installed capacity will exceed 4.1 GW with annual power generation surpassing 20 TWh, making it the largest thermal power plant in southwest China and strengthening peak-shaving supply for the Chongqing grid.
