State Grid Xinyuan starts 1st unit at Zhejiang Qujiang pumped storage plant

State Grid Xinyuan has put the first unit of its Zhejiang Qujiang pumped storage power station into commercial operation, lifting the province's installed pumped storage capacity to a national leading level.

The unit began commercial operation on September 1, bringing Zhejiang's total installed pumped storage capacity to 11.88 GW, the highest among all Chinese provinces, according to State Grid Xinyuan.

Located in Huangtanxiang township, Qujiang district, Quzhou city, the Qujiang station is part of China's 13th "Five-Year Plan" for renewable energy development and one of Zhejiang's first batch of major projects. The facility, comprising upper and lower reservoirs, water conveyance systems and an underground powerhouse, has a total installed capacity of 1.2 GW with four 300 MW reversible pump-turbine generator units. It is designed to generate 1.2 TWh annually and consume 1.6 TWh for pumping, primarily serving peak shaving, frequency regulation, phase modulation and energy storage for the Zhejiang grid.

Once fully operational, the station will help optimize Zhejiang's power supply structure, support renewable energy expansion and ensure stable grid operations. Situated near the 500 kV main ring network in Quzhou, the station serves the Jinhua-Quzhou load center, with the first unit adding clean, stable power to Zhejiang's electricity supply.
