China's far west region of Xinjiang has built the country's largest provincial 750kV backbone power grid, with total transmission line length exceeding 15,000 km following the commissioning of a coal-fired power transmission project in the southern region.
The 750kV Kashgar 2x660MW coal power transmission project in southern Xinjiang was put into operation on August 27, pushing the region's 750kV transmission lines past 15,000 km. Xinjiang now ranks first nationally in both the number of 750kV substations and total line mileage.
Construction of the 750kV grid in Xinjiang has progressed over more than a decade. The 750kV Fenghuang-Wubei transmission project launched in 2008 marked the start of ultra-high voltage grid development in the region.
In 2010, the first 750kV interconnection channel linking Xinjiang with the northwest power grid was completed, integrating the region into the national grid and enabling large-scale outbound transmission of coal-fired and wind power.
The 750kV Yili-Kuqa transmission project commissioned in 2016 established the basic 750kV backbone network. In 2025, the 750kV transmission project encircling the Tarim Basin was completed, forming the country's largest 750kV ultra-high voltage loop network.
Xinjiang's energy resources and electricity demand are inversely distributed, with surpluses in the north and east and deficits in the south and west. The 750kV grid has fundamentally resolved the spatial and temporal mismatch between regional power supply and demand.
Compared with 220kV lines, a single 750kV circuit offers 5-10 times higher transmission capacity and 3-5 times greater transmission distance, better supporting long-distance, high-capacity power delivery.
The robust grid enables mutual support across northern thermal power, eastern wind and solar power, and southern photovoltaic generation, with significantly enhanced cross-regional transmission capacity.
Eastern Xinjiang's transmission capacity has reached the 10 GW level. To date, Xinjiang has built 39 750kV substations and 120 transmission lines, spanning 3,300 km north-south and 2,200 km east-west.
The 750kV backbone network has enabled Xinjiang to form a main grid structure featuring eight internal loop networks and five outbound transmission channels. Three ultra-high voltage direct current lines and two alternating current channels continuously deliver Xinjiang's clean electricity to other parts of the country.
Xinjiang's cross-regional transmission capacity currently stands at 33 GW, with green power outbound volumes expanding steadily. Cumulative outbound electricity exceeded 1.1 trillion kWh by end-July, with new energy accounting for nearly 30%.
From January to July, outbound electricity totaled 96.96 TWh, up 23.12% year on year and hitting a record high for the period. New energy outbound volume reached 36.66 TWh, up 41.56% year on year, representing 37.82% of total outbound power. This equated to savings of 11.09 million tonnes of standard coal and a reduction of 29.94 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power is advancing 38 ultra-high voltage and extra-high voltage grid projects this year, with 11 new projects planned. The program includes 1,917 km of new 750kV lines and 25.5 GVA of additional transformer capacity.
Two additional ultra-high voltage direct current outbound channels for Xinjiang have been included in planning, with one project undergoing preliminary feasibility studies.
By 2030, Xinjiang is expected to complete a main grid structure with three AC and six DC outbound channels, lifting outbound transmission capacity to 60 GW.
