Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has inaugurated 14 solar power projects as the initial phase of the country's program targeting 100 GW-peak of solar capacity by 2029, with total investment estimated at $73 billion, Jakarta Globe reported on August 25.

The projects, with combined capacity of 5.3 GW, were launched at a ceremony in Gilimanuk, Bali. Two are already operational, six are under construction and six are due to be offered to investors, according to energy ministry official Eniya Listiani Dewi. Investment in the 14 projects is estimated at 135 trillion rupiah ($7.63 billion).

The government aims to reach 30 GW of solar capacity in 2026 while retiring 13 GW of diesel-powered plants. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the president had instructed that development be accelerated and completed by 2029, with estimated annual electricity cost savings of 73.9 trillion rupiah.

Among the projects is the 300-MW Gilimanuk plant, expected to generate up to 470 GWh annually and reduce fuel consumption by 151 million liters per year. Other projects include PLTS Madura at 605 MW, PLTS Jatigede at 636 MW and PLTS Cirata at 1.25 GW.

Indonesia estimates its solar potential at about 3.29 TW, but current installed capacity stands at approximately 1.5 GW. The government's electricity supply plan for 2025-34 projects the creation of about 1.7 million jobs through power sector investment, including more than 760,000 green jobs.
