Aurizon has secured a new performance-linked long-term coal haulage contract with BMA (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance), covering metallurgical coal output from multiple Bowen Basin operations: Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji and Caval Ridge, according to an ASX market release from Aurizon.

Effective July 1, 2028, the fresh agreement supports annual haulage volumes of up to 37 million tonnes and replaces the parties' 2015 contract.

The deal carries a maximum 12-year term. Subject to exercise of extension options, the rail-haul partnership with BMA may therefore stretch all the way to 2040. Aurizon's CEO noted BMA accounts for nearly one-quarter of total coal tonnage the firm moves across Queensland, underscoring the customer's central weight in Aurizon's Bowen Basin rail-freight business.

This BMA renewal forms part of a broader re-contracting drive. Since July 2025, Aurizon has locked in over 60 million tonnes per annum of coal-haulage volumes across its customer portfolio. The company says these fresh contracts bolster its competitive standing within Queensland's coal supply chain and deliver long-run volume visibility for investors.
