Coal production in Russia's key producing region, Kuzbass, stood at 107.4 million tonnes in January-July 2026, falling 2.6% year on year, according to data from Kuzbass's Ministry of Coal Industry.

Of that total, production from opencast mines edged up 0.4% on the year to 72.1 million tonnes, while that from underground operations fell 8.3% to 35.4 million tonnes.

July coal output reached 14.7 million tonnes, up 6.5% from a year ago but down 3.9% from the previous month. This included 10.8 million tonnes (+13.7% YoY) of coal mined at open-cuts and 3.9 million tonnes (-9.3% YoY) from underground mines.

Coal shipments from Kuzbass in July totaled 14.9 million tonnes, a 15.0% increase compared with the same period last year.

Export shipments stood at 9.2 million tonnes in the month, up 15.3% year on year. Of this volume, 4.25 million tonnes were shipped eastward, 2.3% below the Russian Railways target; 3.42 million tonnes were delivered northwest, up 19.6% from the year before; and 1.33 million tonnes were shipped southward, rising 55% year on year.

Coal processing volume at the region's washing plants, seasonal processing plants, and crushing/sorting plants reached 12.0 million tonnes in July, up 7.1% from a year earlier, accounting for 81.6% of total monthly output.
