S Korea's KOEN tenders for up to 3.06 Mt of thermal coal over 2026-2030

Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. (KOEN) has issued a tender lately covering two coal grades for its coal-fired power plants, seeking a combined 235,000 tonnes in the first contract year and totaling up to 3.06 million tonnes over the full five-year term, according to an invitation to bid designated ITB KOEN-Coal-2026-LT03, 04.

The higher-CV lot, LT03, seeks coal with a guaranteed minimum CV of 5,800 Kcal/kg NAR, sulfur capped at 0.65% and ash at 15.0%.

First-year volume is set at 155,000 tonnes, plus or minus 10%, shippable in a minimum Capesize lot. Annual volumes for the second through fifth years rise to 465,000 tonnes, or 300% of the first-year quantity.

First-year loading is staggered by origin: the second half of September 2026 for Indonesian coal, the first half of October for Australian, US and Canadian coal, the second half of October for South African coal, and November for Colombian coal. Should a cargo load at Newcastle, the quantity is capped at 140,000 tonnes.

The lower-CV lot, LT04, seeks coal with a guaranteed minimum CV of 4,200 Kcal/kg NAR, sulfur capped at 0.50% and ash at 10.0%.

First-year volume is 80,000 tonnes plus or minus 10% in a minimum Panamax lot, rising to 240,000 tonnes annually from the second to fifth years. First-year cargo is scheduled to begin loading from September 2026, with origin including Indonesia, Australia, US, and Canada.

For both lots, second- to fifth-year shipments run from October 2026 through September 2027, October 2026 through September 2028, October 2027 through September 2029, and October 2028 through September 2030 respectively, evenly spread across each contract year.

Pricing is fixed for the first contract year on an FOBT basis, with prices for subsequent years to be determined by mutual agreement.

Russian and Chinese coal, along with cargo loaded at Chinese ports, are excluded from both lots, as is all coal and any entity subject to US sanctions.

Bids must be submitted through KOEN's website no later than 10:00 a.m. Korean Standard Time on August 14, 2026.
