Turkey's coal imports in June surged to the highest so far in 2026 and the highest for the same month in recent years, driven by strong demand for coking coal and anthracite.

Total coal imports reached 3.24 million tonnes in June, up 7.22% year on year and 50.9% from the previous month, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

The import value stood at $378 million, up 34.55% year on year and 43.57% month on month, putting the average import price at $116.61/t, up 25.49% from a year earlier but down 4.86% from May.

During January-June, Turkey's cumulative coal imports fell 13.91% year on year to 17.64 million tonnes, with the import value down 13.23% to $1.95 billion.

By coal type, other bituminous coal imports totaled 2.70 million tonnes in June, down 5.6% year on year but up 62.81% month on month. Coking coal imports rose 283.17% year on year to 469,900 tonnes, up 7.83% from the previous month. Anthracite imports increased 74.9% year on year and 32.99% month on month to 73,400 tonnes.

Russia remained Turkey's largest coal supplier in June at 2.52 million tonnes, down 9.15% year on year but up 122.13% month on month. Imports from the United States surged 342.85% year on year to 321,800 tonnes, up 14.19% from May. Coal imports from Kazakhstan jumped 411.61% month on month and 170.6% year on year to 243,100 tonnes.

Turkey's coke imports fell 28.22% year on year and 53.69% month on month to 51,000 tonnes in June, with the import value down 29.39% year on year and 54.54% month on month to $13.82 million.

In the first half of the year, Turkey's cumulative coke imports rose 53.92% year on year to 503,500 tonnes, with the import value up 45.82% to $132 million.
