India needs to add about 86.4 GW of new coal and lignite-fired power generation capacity to meet electricity demand in the 2035-36 fiscal year, according to the latest plan from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Some 63.5 GW is already in the implementation stage, of which 47.5 GW is under construction. As of June 2026, India's total installed capacity stood at 548.86 GW, with non-fossil fuel sources accounting for 54.18%. The government is also advancing transmission system development and has set a target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
