Thailand's thermal coal imports surged in June, driven by a sharp increase in bituminous coal purchases from Australia and the United States, reaching their highest level since April 2022.

June imports of thermal coal, including bituminous and sub-bituminous grades, reached 2.44 million tonnes, up 53.61% from 1.59 million tonnes a year earlier and 46.46% from 1.67 million tonnes in May, according to Thai customs data.

Bituminous coal imports totaled 1.23 million tonnes in June, soaring 1.5 times year on year and 444.3% month on month. Australia supplied 1.05 million tonnes, up 6.7 times from 136,200 tonnes a year earlier, while imports from the United States stood at 118,500 tonnes, up 53.3% year on year.

Sub-bituminous coal imports were 1.22 million tonnes in June, up 10.31% year on year but down 15.7% from the previous month. Indonesia remained the top supplier at 958,700 t
