India's coal-fired power plants are grappling with critically low coal inventories due to rainfall disruptions, with current stocks sufficient for only 13 days of consumption, far below the mandated 26-day reserve requirement. Data shows 190 plants with a total installed capacity of over 224 GW require 3.1 million tonnes of coal daily, while existing stocks stand at about 40.4 million tonnes. The power ministry said daily coal supplies are adequate to meet demand, and a joint team from the power, railway and coal ministries has been formed to monitor supply on a daily basis.
