Indonesia's coal export foreign exchange earnings reach US$15 bln in H1 2026

Indonesia's foreign exchange earnings from coal exports reached roughly US$15 billion (about Rp269 trillion) in the first half of 2026, according to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.

The minister said the mining sector continues to support the national economy despite global uncertainties.

"This shows that amidst uncertain global dynamics, our strategy to maintain supply and demand to maintain commodity prices is starting to show signs of improvement, as evidenced by the increase in our non-tax state revenue (PNBP) and the improvement in foreign exchange earnings from sales, which have reached approximately US$15 billion," Bahlil stated at the State Palace on July 21.

He also revealed that PNBP from the energy and mineral resources sector had already exceeded 60% of the annual target by the first semester, driven by better commodity prices and supply management.

Separately, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa noted that new rules on foreign exchange from natural resource exports (DHE SDA) took effect on June 1, 2026, under Government Regulation No. 21/2026.

"So, in Government Regulation 21/2026, the government stipulates several new provisions regarding the placement of DHE natural resources. Among them, natural resource exporters are required to repatriate DHE domestically with a 100% compliance rate," Purbaya said.

For non-oil-and-gas exporters, 100% of DHE SDA must be placed in a special domestic account for at least 12 months, while oil-and-gas exporters must place a minimum of 30% for three months. The funds are required to be placed through Himbara banks.

The government also limits currency conversion: exporters may convert no more than 50% of DHE SDA funds from foreign currency into rupiah.
