Indonesia will require all coal exports to be conducted exclusively through state-owned PT Danantara Sumberdaya Indonesia (PT DSI) from January 1, 2027, under a new trade ministerial regulation, a senior official said on June 9.

The Ministry of Trade's Ministerial Regulation No. 15 of 2026 sets out a transition period running from June 1 to December 31, 2026, during which private exporters holding valid business permits and registered coal exporter status may continue to ship coal independently, but must report export activities to DSI via an integrated system.

"Exports of strategic coal commodities can only be carried out by the government; that was the initial spirit. However, adjustments will certainly be necessary along the way – in this case a gradual transition," said Muhammad Rivai Abbas, Director of Industrial and Mining Product Exports at the Ministry of Trade's Directorate of Foreign Trade, at an online policy briefing in Jakarta.
