India's government imposed an anti-dumping duty on imports of cold-rolled steel from China for 5 years on December 18 to protect the domestic industry, local media reported.

Under this, duty on cold rolled non-oriented electrical steel (CRNO) from China ranges from $223.82/t-$414.92/t, according to a notification from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR).

The CRNO is a type of electrical steel with randomly oriented grains, including cold‐rolled flat steel products of silicon-electrical steel, whether or not in coils, regardless of width and thickness. It is widely used for equipment like motors, generators, and small transformers.

Cold rolled full hard silicon electrical steel (CRFH), used for manufacturing of CRNO, is excluded from the duty, the DGTR said.

The duty was imposed after the DGTR concluded that the domestic steel industry has suffered material injury due to low prices of imports from China. The investigation was initiated following a complaint by the domestic industry alleging dumping of these products in the Indian market.

Earlier in November, India also levied an anti-dumping duty of $121.55/t on imports of hot rolled flat steel products from Vietnam for a five-year period.
