Coal shipments from Australia's Gladstone port stood at 4.90 million tonnes in January 2025, down 3.2% year on year and 14.4% month on month, marking a decrease for the second straight month, showed data from Gladstone Ports Corporation.

Gladstone shipped 1.44 million tonnes of coal to South Korea in the month, surging 119.0% on the year and 57.7% from a month earlier, while Japan received 1.35 million tonnes of coal from the port, down 27.6% from the year prior and 17.1% on the month.

Coal exports to India were 921,900 tonnes in January, up 16.5% on the year but falling 5.7% on the month, data showed.

Coal exports to Vietnam increased 1.5% from a year ago yet fell 2.2% from the month before to 434,800 tonnes, while shipments to China's Taiwan soared by 264.9% year on year and 87.1% month on month to 301,000 tonnes. Coal shipments China's mainland slumped 33.8% on the year and 84.5% on the month to 166,700 tonnes.

Around 70% of Gladstone coal exports are metallurgical coal, used for steelmaking, and the rest 30% are thermal coal mainly for power generation.

Total coal exports amounted to 66.07 million tonnes last year, up 3.7% from a year ago, data showed.
