Indonesia mined 774.01 million tonnes of coal in the year to December 13, surpassing its 2024 target of 710 million tonnes by 9.02%, according to data from Minerba One Data Indonesia (MODI).

Meanwhile, the country's coal sales stood at 746.31 million tonnes, with exports reaching 397.40 million tonnes, and the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) recorded at 162.03 million tonnes.

Domestic and international coal demand increased compared to 2023, partly driven by the growing demand from power and smelting sectors, said Gita Mahyarani, acting executive director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI).

China and several ASEAN countries also dominate Indonesia's coal export, according to Mahyarani.

Previously, Surya Herjuna, director at the country's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, expressed optimism that the coal output target would be met.

Indonesia mined 775 million tonnes of coal in 2023, a record high since 2016, partly owing to significant growth of coal-fired power generation in the country. The heated global political landscape helped boost coal demand from countries that previously used alternative energy, Herjuna said.

In 2023, Indonesia exported 518 million tonnes of coal and met a DMO of 213 million tonnes.
