Weekly: China's anthracite prices soften more amid stock buildup

China's anthracite prices weakened more compared with the week prior, as both lump and slack anthracite prices declined.


Coal miners maintained high capacity utilization rate last week. But given relatively adequate supplies, coal sales were not smooth and some miners reported stock built.


The metallurgical, chemical and cement plants only sustained on-demand purchases, and some buyers presented quite sluggish demand for raw materials. The bearish sentiment started to emerge on the market.


Sxcoal learned anthracite stocks at most urea producers are enough for seven day's usage. In the meantime, weak civil demand also pressured anthracite prices.


Steel mills also showed prudence in restocking due to ordinary steel product consumption.


Prevailing offers for 6,800 Kcal/kg NAR 0.5%-sulfur small-lump anthracite in Jincheng of Shanxi fell 50 yuan/t week on week at 1,750-1,830 yuan/t free-on-rail basis with VAT, and the 0.5%-sulfur 5,800 Kcal/kg NAR slack anthracite coal decreased to 1,180-1,250 yuan/t, ex-washplant basis with VAT.


As of March 13, Fenwei assessed the price of 7,000 Kcal/kg NAR mid-lump anthracite with 0.5% sulfur in Jincheng at 2,030 yuan/t, ex-washplant basis with VAT, unchanged from a week ago.


The price of 7,000 Kcal/kg NAR washed small lump anthracite (S 0.5%) in Jincheng stayed flat at 1,990 yuan/t, ex-washplant with VAT, and that of 6,000 Kcal/kg NAR anthracite slack with 0.5% sulfur in Jincheng remained steady at 1,350 yuan/t, ex-washplant with VAT.
