China Energy Investment Corp (CHN Energy) has started construction of a 1 GW coal-fired power project in Ordos, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, according to China Energy Engineering Group Tianjin Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd.

The project, located in Kangbashi district, involves a 1 GW ultra-supercritical, single reheat, indirect air-cooled coal-fired generating unit, along with desulfurization, denitrification and dust removal facilities.

It is a key energy project in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, a supporting power source project for the region's 15th "Five-Year Plan" period, and a critical project to safeguard grid base load and optimize the traditional thermal power structure in western Inner Mongolia.

The project is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2029, with an annual power generation of about 4.5 TWh after commissioning. It will also provide district heating, further enhancing the stability and peak-shaving capacity of the western Inner Mongolia grid and ensuring power and heating demand in Ordos and surrounding areas.
