Inner Mongolia's power market completed its first trade on a non-working day, marking a shift to continuous natural-day trading for medium- and long-term transactions.

The Inner Mongolia Power Exchange Center organized the full sequence of intra-month trades on September 19, with 7.28 GWh cleared that day, the first such organization on a non-working day since continuous trading began, according to the exchange.

The region launched continuous natural-day trading for medium- and long-term power transactions on September 14, kicking off year-round, regularized trading, in line with national and regional directives aimed at securing power supply and supporting efficient renewable energy consumption.

As the region's new-type power system takes shape and supply-demand dynamics grow more complex, adapting market mechanisms to the short-term output volatility of high-penetration renewables has become a priority. The adjustment responds to the National Energy Administration's overall plan for power market development, moving regional trading from weekday operations to continuous, refined natural-day operations and closing the "last mile" between medium- and long-term and spot markets.

The mechanism upgrade is expected to invigorate the market and promote high-quality regional power market development. With a full-cycle trading window, generators and power users can tailor strategies to their operations and respond quickly to load swings, extreme weather and sharp renewable output fluctuations, hedging market risk, stabilizing prices and securing expected returns.
