Huaneng North China launches molten salt storage system

Huaneng North China's green power supply project has commissioned a 61 MW/244 MWh molten salt energy storage system, marking its first industrial steam supply to users in the Dalad Economic Development Zone.

The system is part of a national key R&D program supporting new thermal energy storage efficiency and digital twin technology. It uses molten salt as the storage medium, equipped with 61 MW of electric heaters and 244 MWh of modular molten salt storage capacity. The system converts electricity into thermal energy for storage and releases heat to generate steam on demand, enabling flexible matching of power consumption and steam supply.

The green power supply project integrates photovoltaic generation, transmission and distribution networks, the 61 MW/244 MWh molten salt storage system and a 32 MW/128 MWh electrochemical storage system. The coordinated operation is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 680,000 tonnes per year.

The project is the first in China to couple desert photovoltaic power, an incremental distribution network, long-duration molten salt storage and short-duration electrochemical storage with a high-energy-consumption industrial park, providing a replicable model for integrated source-grid-load-storage projects and supporting China's dual carbon goals.
