Mongolian miner SouthGobi Resources reported a rise in second-quarter coal sales and prices, showed the latest data released by the company. 

Total coal sales reached 3.5 million tonnes in April-June 2026, up 18.2% year on year, while the average selling price rose 15.4% to $60.62/t over the same period.

The company attributed the price increase to a larger proportion of premium semi-soft coking coal sales during the quarter, which also achieved higher realised prices.

The product mix in the second quarter comprised approximately 49% premium semi-soft coking coal, 24% standard semi-soft coking coal, 18% premium thermal coal and 9% coal by-products.

In the year-earlier period, the mix was about 15% premium semi-soft coking coal, 60% standard semi-soft coking coal, 22% premium thermal coal, 1% standard thermal coal and 2% coal by-products.

For the first half of the year, total coal sales reached 6.61 million tonnes, up 31.7% year on year.

Raw coal production in the second quarter totalled 5.12 million tonnes, up 30.9% year on year, bringing first-half output to 10.1 million tonnes, a 29.0% increase.

The company posted an operating profit of $14.12 million in the second quarter, swinging from a loss of $14.33 million a year earlier, supported by higher sales volumes and improved average selling prices.

Revenue reached $212 million in the quarter, up 36.3% year on year, while the net loss narrowed to $5.32 million from $22.81 million in the same period last year.

In the first half, SouthGobi recorded an operating profit of $18.71 million, reversing a year-earlier loss, with revenue of $381 million, up 37.0% year on year. The net loss stood at $13.36 million.

SouthGobi owns and operates the Ovoot Tolgoi coal mine in Mongolia and holds mining licences for other metallurgical and thermal coal deposits in the South Gobi region. The company sells coal to customers in China.
