Gansu UHV lines send 50+ TWh of power east in 2026

Two ultra-high voltage (UHV) direct current transmission projects from Gansu province delivered over 50 TWh of electricity eastward this year, supporting power demand in Hunan and Shandong provinces.

The Gansu-Hunan and Gansu-Shandong ±800 kV UHV DC projects transmitted 50.71 TWh of power as of Aug 27, according to State Grid Gansu Electric Power Co.

The Gansu-Hunan line delivered 21.81 TWh this year, bringing cumulative transmission to 245.33 TWh, while the Gansu-Shandong line sent 28.9 TWh.

The two transmission corridors serve as key pillars of China's west-to-east power transmission program. The Gansu-Hunan project is the country's first large-scale DC line combining wind, solar and thermal power, while the Gansu-Shandong line integrates wind, solar, thermal and storage with renewable energy accounting for over 40% of capacity.

With sustained high temperatures driving record power demand in central and eastern China this summer, both lines have operated at high loads. The Gansu-Hunan line exceeded 100 GWh of daily deliveries for 57 consecutive days, while the Gansu-Shandong line ran at full capacity for 72 days, with peak daily shipments surpassing 190 GWh.

The 50 TWh delivered this year is enough to cover annual electricity consumption for about 15 million households, easing summer supply pressure in central and eastern regions and supporting Gansu's transition from a renewable resource base to a green power industry hub.
