Indonesia's PTBA raises 2026 production target on firmer coal prices

Indonesian state coal miner PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has slightly raised its coal production target for 2026 to 49.55 million tonnes, from an earlier goal of 49.5 million tonnes, as it seeks to capitalize on rising global prices and recovering operating conditions after a first-half contraction in output, the company said on September 1.

President Director Bambang Ismawan said the company is entering a period of more conducive operating conditions, enabling it to drive a production recovery while strengthening export sales. Sales are targeted at 49.51 million tonnes, while transport volume is set at 41 million tonnes with a stripping ratio of 5.63 times.

During the first half of 2026, its production fell 10% year on year to 19.45 million tonnes, while sales slipped 2% to 21.1 million tonnes. Domestic sales declined 9% to 10.77 million tonnes, while exports grew 5% to 10.33 million tonnes. The stripping ratio improved to 5.26 times from 6.17 times a year earlier.

Second-quarter operational performance showed recovery, with production up 94% quarter on quarter and sales rising 8%. The average selling price increased 14% on the quarter and 10% on the year.

Operating revenue rose 8% to 22.03 trillion rupiah ($1.24 billion) in the first half, while cost of revenue fell 2%, lifting gross profit 89% to 4.25 trillion rupiah. Operating profit surged 209% to 2.82 trillion rupiah, and net profit attributable to the parent jumped 218% to 2.65 trillion rupiah. EBITDA rose 94% to 4.27 trillion rupiah.

Capital expenditure stood at 1.09 trillion rupiah by end-June, about 30% of the full-year target of 3.64 trillion rupiah. The majority was allocated to coal transport development on the Tanjung Enim-Kramasan route, the company said.
